Valentines Day is filled with promise. The idea is to celebrate our love for one another. To show our gratitude and appreciation for the ones we love.

However, over the years, the 14th of February, has become a day filled with materialism. We seem to have forgotten the true meaning behind it and instead of placing value on each others company, we focus on material gifts and decor that will remain in and damage our environment for years to come.

A birds eye view of a burgundy, crocheted heart sat on an off white surface. There is a silver crochet hook and darning needle coming in from the left, a pair of scissors on the right and a green succulent at the top.

Whilst this tradition of gift giving and plastic decor is difficult to get out of, we can try to make things better by choosing more sustainable options.

Here is a list of 7 Valentines Day crochet patterns that I have chosen specifically for making Valentines Day less wasteful. Before we get to the list here are a few facts that you may not be aware of.

Some Facts About Valentines Day

The 14th of February, every year, sees a rise in CO2 levels by 9 million kilograms, ontop of the usual that we produce. There are some major culprits that contribute to this number and the amount of waste that will hang around for years. Here are a few:

  • Cut flowers seem relatively harmless however they are one of the most contributing items to the rise in CO2 levels. Because the flowers are grown out of the season, they are mostly grown in greenhouses so that we can control the temperature and atmosphere and then they are exported around the world from their country of origin.

  • Balloons will remain in the environment for 450 years.

  • Glitter is a microplastic that will stay in our oceans, soil, and air for hundreds of years.

Which Yarn is Best?

If you’re considering Valentines Day crochet patterns to help reduce waste then choosing a sustainable yarn is just as important. The most sustainable yarn to choose is the one you already have in your stash, so use them up first.

However, if you need to buy some yarn then consider buying a more sustainable option like organic cotton, linen or hemp.

Here are a few yarn suggestions that I believe are suitable for these crochet patterns and sustainable.
