Learning how to crochet your own kitchen items is a game changer when it comes to living more sustainably at home. Depending on the kitchen crochet patterns, it can save huge amounts of plastic waste and also saves our precious waters from tiny micro plastics.

The items that make the biggest impact for zero waste living are things like dishcloths, scrubbies and scourers. Items that we use for washing and cleaning, as these come into contact with water and get worn away more quickly and thrown away more regularly.

However, there are so many more things we can make to help us keep a more sustainable kitchen. So, here is a curated list of items to make that I think you will really love.

A grid of four photos of patterns which are featured in the article. From top left to bottom right, a stack of pastel coloured hand towels, a white and gold honeycombed bread bag, a square braided hemp dish scrubby, a red, blue and yellow chair sock.

Before we dive into the kitchen crochet patterns, let’s go over which sustainable yarns are the best to use for these items and where you can buy them from.

Which Yarns Are Best for Kitchen Items

Overall, plant based yarns are the most sustainable options as they are kinder to the environment and they don’t create any waste because they can be composted at home. Please check the pattern you are working with to make sure the weight is appropriate for your project.

For Cleaning and Scrubbing

If the item you are making is going to come into contact with water, i.e. you’re going to use it for cleaning or washing dishes then definitely avoid anything synthetic like microfibre, polyester, nylon, acrylic etc. All these fibres shed microplastics and will contaminate the water. The best yarns here are hemp or recycled/organic cotton depending on if you want them to be absorbent (cotton) or scrubby (hemp).

For Storage and Decor Items

Are you making a storage basket, onion holder or a fruit hammock? Something that needs to hold some weight, then you will need something that doesn’t stretch too much. Synthetic yarns tend to be stretchy and so I would again avoid them here. The best options for something like this would be cotton again or linen as they are sturdy. Linen is also lovely and smooth which will give your item a beautiful finish.
