Which Yarn to Use for a Washcloths?
The most common yarn to use for washcloths is 100% cotton because of its absorbency and durability. However, that is not the only option and it depends on what type of washcloth you want.
What Type of Washcloth Do You Want to Make?
A Scrubby Washlcoth?
Do you want your washcloth to be scrubby and gently exfoliating? Then hemp yarn or nettle yarn are perfect yarns to use. My Textured Puff Washcloth that you can find in the list below and free on my blog uses 100% hemp yarn for this very reason and for its environmental sustainability. It also means that they can be easily composted at the end of their lives with no worry about toxic dyes entering the soil.
A Soft Washcloth?
Would you prefer a softer washcloth for moping up spills or gentle washing for babies? Then 100% cotton is your best bet, however, be sure to use organic cotton if you can in order to support a more sustainable production of yarn and help look after our planet.
Something In-between?
Do you want something in the middle? You could also opt for 100% linen, which is softer than hemp but not as super soft as cotton.
If you can, I would avoid using any synthetic yarns like polyester, nylon or those that have elastane in them to make washcloths as they can shed microplastics into our water streams and once they’re no longer usable you can’t do anything else but send them to landfill.
Yarn Recommendations
Here are some sustainable yarns that I would recommend using to make washcloths. If you want to make sure you make the same size washcloth as the pattern you choose then be sure to check the weight of the yarn matches what you need.
